Mission Statement

Many people who enter retirement seek a cause to support. My cause is independent shoe retailing. By empowering independent shoe stores with tailored strategies and industry insights, I help these businesses thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape dominated by large chains and e-commerce giants. Independent retailers are the lifeblood of the community, providing a level of personalized service, unique product selections, and a deep understanding of customer needs that cannot be matched by larger corporate entities.

The benefits of achieving this mission ripple across the entire footwear industry. By sustaining and strengthening the presence of independent stores, we contribute to improved brand equity for vendors, as their products are presented and sold by passionate retailers who are deeply knowledgeable about the footwear they carry. This, in turn, helps wholesale representatives enjoy more stable relationships and business, as they work with retailers who are committed to long-term growth and success.

Consumers also gain significantly when independent stores remain viable. Shoppers benefit from the high-quality, personalized service that independent retailers provide, including proper fitting, expert advice, and a curated selection that meets the specific needs of their local community. This level of service ensures that consumers leave the store not only with the right pair of shoes but also with a positive shopping experience that builds loyalty and trust.

For retail sales staff, working with independent owners often means stronger personal connections, a shared sense of purpose, and a more supportive work environment. This translates into higher job satisfaction, lower turnover, and more stable long-term employment opportunities. Sales associates in independent stores often have a vested interest in the business’s success, creating a cohesive team that consistently delivers excellent service, leading to increased sales performance.

One of the keys to the long-term success of independent retailers is supporting family succession. I work with the next generation of family members, helping them understand the various disciplines required to succeed as merchants. These include Merchandising and Buying, where product selection and inventory management are paramount; Marketing and Advertising, to effectively communicate the store’s unique value proposition; Sales and Customer Service, focusing on building relationships and enhancing the shopping experience; Operations and Financial Management, ensuring efficient store processes and profitability; and Human Resources, to build and maintain a strong, motivated team. By educating and involving the next generation in these essential disciplines, we ensure that family-owned stores can transition smoothly to future leaders who are prepared to face the challenges of modern retail.

By supporting independent retailers, I aim to create a win-win scenario where vendors, wholesale reps, store owners, staff, and customers all benefit. Strong independent retailers mean a healthier, more diverse industry, where innovation and community engagement thrive. This, in turn, safeguards the character of retail districts, bolsters local economies, and ensures that the art and craft of shoe retailing continue to flourish.

My mission is to preserve and support independent ownership in the shoe retail industry, reversing the trend of closures among local retailers. (read more here)
