DRESS FOR SUCCESS
By Alan Miklofsky/June 27, 2024
In response to the recent post by an anonymous contributor on Shoe Dogs United, I'd like to address a critical issue in our industry: the appearance of a few sales representatives who arrive at our stores in shorts and sometimes wrinkled tee shirts. The post rightly points out the declining dress standards among some reps, and I'd like to offer my perspective on why dressing well is essential for success in our field.
First Impressions Matter
The title of this response, "Dress for Success," encapsulates a fundamental truth: how you dress directly impacts the success you aim to achieve. In the retail business, first impressions are everything. When a sales rep shows up in wrinkled t-shirts, sweatpants, or basketball shorts that look like they were pulled from the bottom of a hamper, it sends the wrong message. It suggests a lack of care and professionalism, which can translate into a lack of trust from potential clients. Any rep who gets less than desireable results should consider whether his demeaner, attitude or even appearance negatively impacted his results.
Dress for the Position You Want
Some might argue that low wages are a reason for dressing down. While it's true that compensation can be an issue, it shouldn't be an excuse for neglecting personal appearance. Dressing well is about showing respect for yourself and your profession, regardless of your current position or salary. You dress for the position you want, not just the one you have.
Anonymous Validity
The validity of the anonymous post remains intact regardless of the identity of the poster. The concern raised about professional appearance is a shared sentiment among many in our industry, even if it comes from an anonymous source. It's a call to action for sales reps and their employers to prioritize a professional demeanor.
Not the Customer's Job
It's important to note that it isn't the customer's job to educate the sales rep on how to dress. While some may suggest offering a gentle nudge or advice, this can lead to uncomfortable situations and potentially damage client relationships. The responsibility lies with the sales reps and their employers to ensure that the representatives understand and adhere to professional standards.
A Common Issue
While it might not be the norm for all sales reps to dress inappropriately, it's not an isolated incident either: it happens far too often. By addressing this, we can raise the standard for all and improve the overall perception of our industry.
The Path Forward
In conclusion, dressing well is a critical component of professional success in the retail industry. It reflects your attitude towards your job and the respect you have for your clients. Employers must emphasize the importance of appearance and provide guidelines for their sales teams. As we move forward, let's strive to maintain a standard that reflects the professionalism and dedication we bring to our roles every day.
